Human fertility, a good to be preserved: from theory to laboratory applications

On February 24 and 25, 2025, the orientation event “Human fertility, a good to be preserved: from theory to laboratory applications” was held at the Polo Didattico in San Miniato. The initiative, organized by Prof. Alice Luddi and Dr. Laura Governini, professors of Applied Biology of the research group of Prof. Paola Piomboni, at the Department of Molecular and Developmental Medicine of the University of Siena, is part of the “PNRR Orientation” program, within the “Active Orientation in the School-University Transition” path. The event involved 60 students from three fourth-grade classes of the ITIS Galileo Galilei in Arezzo, as well as some students from the Peri High School in Arcidosso and the San Giovanni Bosco High School in Colle Val D’Elsa. The main objective of the course was to raise students’ awareness of fertility issues and the risk factors that can compromise it. Through a theoretical-practical approach, participants had the opportunity to delve into the mechanisms of gametogenesis, the most recent discoveries in the field of fertility preservation and medically assisted procreation techniques. One of the peculiarities of the initiative was the direct laboratory experience, which allowed students to acquire practical skills in biotechnology in the field of reproduction. Through practical experiences, participants were able to directly experiment with the methodologies used in research and clinical applications, working in groups within a highly specialized scientific environment. A virtual reality laboratory was also held within this orientation program, held in collaboration with Prof. Alessandro Innocenti, Full Professor of Economic Policy at the Department of Social, Political and Cognitive Sciences and Director of DIRV, the Interdepartmental Center of the University of Siena for the use of virtual reality for advanced teaching. The introduction of this laboratory was aimed at promoting innovation in educational methodologies and learning systems, through the adoption of virtual reality. In particular, the aim was to enhance the potential offered by this technology, such as total immersion, dynamic interaction with content and the possibility of involving multiple senses simultaneously, thus improving the learning experience of students. This two-day training course represented an important opportunity for orientation for students, providing them with useful tools for choosing their future academic and professional path. The event attracted great interest, confirming the importance of initiatives that focus on scientific training and awareness of reproductive health issues. The University of Siena continues to promote moments of discussion and in-depth analysis on topics of great relevance, strengthening the link between School and University, also offering students opportunities for growth and specialization.
